Shehbaz Sharif and Imran Khan
Islamabad: There is a big stir in Pakistan’s politics. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif offered peace to Imran Khan, saying that he could talk to him if he was facing “trouble” in jail. Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, has been in jail since August last year after being convicted in some of the nearly 200 cases registered against him since the party was ousted from power in April 2022.
‘Let us talk’
Addressing the National Assembly, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said, “If their (PTI’s) founder is facing trouble (in jail), then I repeat: Let us sit and talk.” He said, “Let us sit together to take the country forward. Let us talk for the betterment of the country. There is no other way to move forward.”
There is a conflict between the two parties
The Nawaz Sharif-led Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and cricketer-turned-politician Khan’s (71) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have been at loggerheads for several years, especially after the February 8 elections which Khan’s party claims it won.
Shahbaz Sharif expressed regret
“If injustice is done to anybody, I believe the scales of justice should be in favour of the victim, there is no difference – whether it is a politician or a person from any field,” Geo News quoted Sharif as saying. Sharif (72) lamented that he had once again proposed talks with Khan when he was in the opposition. “So who is responsible for this bitterness (among politicians)? We don’t even shake hands now,” he said. (PTI)
