Islamabad: Last year, riots broke out in the country after the arrest of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. Many people were also arrested after the riots. Now big news has come out regarding the riots. At least 20 people involved in the riots and convicted by the court have been released before Eid after Army Chief General Asim Munir granted amnesty. The government has informed the Supreme Court about this decision.
Hearing is taking place in the Supreme Court
The top court is hearing appeals on October 23, 2023, against its unanimous decision declaring the trial of civilians in military courts illegal. A bench of six judges of the apex court is hearing these appeals. The case pertains to the prosecution of 103 civilians for their alleged involvement in attacks on vital military installations during the riots that broke out following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.
The rioters had created a ruckus
Dozens of military installations and government buildings, including the military headquarters in Rawalpindi, were damaged or set on fire during the riots. More than 100 vehicles of police and other security agencies were set on fire.
This was said in the report
The report presented in the apex court said that 20 persons were sentenced to one year imprisonment, of which 17 have served 10-and-a-half months and three persons have served nine-and-a-half months. Since most of them have spent about 10 months in jail, the remaining period of their sentence was waived off by the Army Chief and they were released on April 6 and 7. (Language)
