Islamabad: A top court in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad has stayed the execution of five former Pakistani naval officers. These are the officers who were earlier sentenced to death by an order of the ‘General Court Martial’. According to the news of ‘Dawn News’, Islamabad High Court Judge Babar Sattar has issued a written order on the request of the naval officers. The case was heard in the court on Monday. The stay on the death sentence is considered a big relief for the naval officers.
Legal aid not provided
The naval officers had said that they were not given legal aid during the ‘General Court Martial’ order. No further details were available as to why the five former naval personnel were sentenced to death. The court directed that “since the fundamental question of protection of the right to life and due process is involved, the petitioners shall not be executed till the disposal of the petition.”
