Peshawar: Journalists are not safe in Pakistan. Journalists are targeted and even murdered every day. Now a similar case has come to light from the troubled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the north-west of Pakistan. Here unknown gunmen have shot and killed a Pakistani journalist. A tribal journalists association has given information about this murder.
Shot near home
Khalil Jibran, associated with the Pashto news channel ‘Khyber News’, was shot dead near his house in Mazrina Sultankhel area of Khyber district. Another person named Sajid has been injured in the firing. The attackers managed to escape from the spot after killing the journalist. Sources said that police teams have reached the spot and investigation into the case has been started.
There have been attacks before
This is not the first time a journalist has been killed in Pakistan. Earlier in the month of May, on Press Freedom Day, a bomb blast took place in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. A senior journalist was killed and seven others were injured in this blast. The deceased journalist was identified as Muhammad Siddique Mengal, president of Khuzdar Press Club. Mengal was killed in the blast after a remote-controlled bomb hit his vehicle while he was traveling on the Sultan Ibrahim Highway on the outskirts of Khuzdar city.
This is the condition of Pakistan
Let us also tell you here that in the World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Sans Frontiers in the year 2023, Pakistan was ranked 150th out of 180 countries. Reporters Sans Frontiers is a non-profit organization that defends and promotes freedom of information. According to a report by the Freedom Network, at least 53 journalists have been killed in Pakistan from 2012 to 2022, in which only two cases have been punished. (Language)
