For the first time in the Pakistani Army, a minority woman has been promoted to a high post in the army. Christian female officer Helen Mary Roberts has been promoted to the rank of Brigadier. She has become the first woman from the minority community to reach the rank of one-star general. According to the report, Helen Mary Roberts, serving in the Army Medical Corps, is among the officers who were promoted as Brigadier and full Colonel by the selection board.
She has served as a pathologist in the Army Medical Corps for 26 years. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) termed her as “another living example of merit and national representation” in the Pakistan Army. Before Brigadier Roberts, Major General Nigar Johar broke gender barriers in June 2020 by becoming the first female officer in the country to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and became the first female Surgeon General of the Pakistan Army.
PM Shahbaz congratulated
Last year, during a Christmas celebration at Christ Church in Rawalpindi, army chief Gen Asim Munir praised the role of the Christian community in Pakistan’s development, citing their contribution to quality education, healthcare and philanthropy as well as boosting national defence. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif congratulated Roberts on his promotion.
Promoted to the rank of Brigadier
“Brig. Roberts, a member of the Pakistani Christian community, has created history by becoming the first woman from a minority background to hold this prestigious post,” the Pakistan Prime Minister said. He praised Roberts’ hard work and dedication. Shahbaz Sharif said this also proves that Pakistani women can excel in any field. He said the entire nation is proud of Brig. Roberts and thousands of hardworking women like her from minority communities who are serving the nation. (IANS)
