New Delhi: Congress fiercely targeted BJP and the Central Government on the issue of Katchatheevu Island. Congress spokesperson Pawan Kheda said on Monday that PM Modi does not come after doing homework. He said that in the year 2015, the Modi government had replied to the RTI on the issue of Katchatheevu Island that neither it gave any land to Sri Lanka nor took any land. Doesn’t PM Modi know that this island had fishing rights till 2014? Why did fishing rights go away after 2014? PM Modi and BJP should answer this. Pawan Kheda said that making such light talk does not suit the Prime Minister.
KC Venugopal made this allegation
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tweet and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s press conference on the issue of Katchatheevu island, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that this is a distraction strategy of BJP. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP P Chidambaram said that this is an absurd allegation.
Chidambaram said this
Chidambaram stated that this agreement was made in 1974 and 1976. While PM Modi is referring to a recent RTI reply, he should be referring to the RTI reply of January 27, 2015, when External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was the Foreign Secretary. That reply clearly states that after negotiations the island is on the Sri Lankan side of the international border. Why did Indira Gandhi accept that it belonged to Sri Lanka? Since there were 6 lakh Tamil victims in Sri Lanka, they had to come to India as refugees. As a result of this agreement, 6 lakh Tamils came to India and are enjoying freedom here with all human rights.
Foreign Minister made this claim
Let us tell you that External Affairs Minister Jaishankar claimed on Monday that Congress Prime Ministers showed indifference towards Katchatheevu island and took away the rights of Indian fishermen. Jaishankar told a press conference that prime ministers like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi had described Katchatheevu as a “small island” and a “small rock”. He said that this issue has not come up suddenly but it has always been a live issue. The issue of taking back Katchatheevu has been the subject of heated debate between the major Dravidian parties.
