The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice on a petition filed by suspended Additional Director General of Police Gurjinder Pal Singh against a Chhattisgarh High Court order refusing to grant him interim bail in a case filed against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act. . Ramana said orally, “These officers… when you are good with the government, when the government changes, you have to face heat (warm attitude).”
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Singh, said when the government changes, things also change.
“They forget what they did,” the bench said.
After a brief hearing in the matter, the bench issued notice and posted the matter for further hearing after four weeks. Sibal urged the court to list the matter after two weeks. The bench said nothing will happen in four weeks.
In the present petition, Singh argued that the state agency has not sought any extension for his police custody, but has sought judicial custody before the trial court.
In January, the Chhattisgarh Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Singh, who is under suspension and has been charged with corruption, sedition and promoting enmity.
On January 3 this year, the top court had dismissed a petition by Singh challenging the High Court order that had denied him protection from arrest in a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The top court said, “After hearing the senior counsel appearing for the petitioner and perusing the material available on record, we see no reason to interfere with the impugned order passed by the High Court of Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur, whose By the said court in the First Information Report of offense no. 22/2021, the application of the petitioner for stay of the arrest and further proceedings was dismissed.”
The top court, while hearing a petition filed by Singh against him in an extortion case last year, had said, “When a political party is in power, the police officers are with them… but when a new party is in power. If it comes, the government initiates action against those officials. This is a new trend which needs to be stopped.”
