Visakhapatnam. Everyone is surprised by the defeat suffered by the Delhi Capitals team in the Indian Premier League 2024 match played on Wednesday, April 3. The team’s head coach Ricky Ponting described the 106-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders as unacceptable and disappointing. He lashed out at all the bowlers including team captain Rishabh Pant and reprimanded the entire team.
After winning the toss, Kolkata captain Shreyas Iyer had decided to bat first in this match against Delhi. Gautam Gambhir got the team’s main spinner Sunil Narine to open again and he came and scored an inning of 85 runs in 39 balls. Kolkata scored 150 runs in the first 11 overs. Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who made his debut, also scored a quick half-century. In the end, thanks to the innings of Andre Russell and Rinku Singh, the team managed to reach 272 runs.
Delhi Capitals first allowed KKR to score 272 runs for seven wickets and later the entire team was out for 166 runs in 17.2 overs. Ponting said in the press conference after the match, “It is difficult to review it right now.” I am very disappointed with the team’s performance in the first half. Giving so many runs is beyond comprehension. We bowled 17 wide balls and took two hours to complete our overs. As a result, we were again left two overs behind, which means that those who bowled the last two overs got only four fielders after the circle.
Against Kolkata, Rasik Salam gave 47 runs in 3 overs while Enrich Norkhia gave away 59 runs after 4 overs. Ishant Sharma gave away 43 runs after 3 overs. He said, “A lot happened in the match which is unacceptable.” We will discuss this within the team and improve it soon. It is important to have good and open conversations. Bowling, field placement, everything will have to be discussed.
