Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to go on a two-day visit to the neighboring country Bhutan on March 21 and 22. Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay recently visited India on a five-day visit and invited PM Modi to Bhutan. However, now PM Modi’s visit to Bhutan has been postponed. The Ministry of External Affairs has informed on Wednesday evening that the proposed state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bhutan has been postponed due to bad weather.
Discussion continues on new date
According to the information, due to bad weather conditions at Paro Airport, it has been mutually decided to postpone the state visit of the Prime Minister to Bhutan on 21-22 March 2024. India’s Foreign Ministry has informed that both the countries are working on new dates for the proposed two-day state visit of PM Modi.
Emphasis on neighbor first policy
The statement of the Ministry of External Affairs has also come out regarding PM Modi’s visit to Bhutan. The ministry said that India and Bhutan share a unique and enduring partnership. This partnership is rooted in mutual trust, understanding and goodwill. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this visit of Prime Minister Modi is going to be in line with the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan and the emphasis on the government’s Neighbor First policy.
Why is Bhutan important?
Bhutan’s border is adjacent to both India and China, which acts as a buffer state. In such a situation, China makes every effort to bring Bhutan to its side. In recent times, China has also increased its interference in Bhutan. Therefore, this visit of PM Modi to Bhutan is considered important. Let us tell you that even after assuming office in 2014, PM Modi had gone to Bhutan on his first visit. (input language)
