The changes in the politics of the country after the nineties have affected the mathematics of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament. After the recent Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP has reached its peak with 100 members, while the Congress is at its lowest level with 33 MPs.
In the coming Rajya Sabha elections, there will be a slight advantage for the Congress, but the way the party is losing its power in the states, after a few years it may face the possibility of losing the status of the main opposition party in the Rajya Sabha as well.
BJP keeps its graph up despite the setbacks
In the late 90s, Mandal-Kamandal politics had changed the condition and direction of the country. The graph of BJP had started rising, on the other hand, problems were increasing for the Congress. After this, in three decades, the BJP has kept its graph up despite some setbacks, while the problems are increasing more for the Congress. Especially after the formation of the BJP government under the leadership of Narendra Modi at the Center in 2014, the Congress is finding it difficult to maintain its governments in the states. At present, Congress is in power in only two states.
Rajya Sabha Arithmetic
This has made a big difference in the arithmetic of the Parliament, especially the Rajya Sabha. In 1990, Congress used to have 108 Rajya Sabha MPs, which has now come down to 33. At the same time, BJP has reached from 55 to 100. To get the status of the main opposition party in the Rajya Sabha, 25 MPs are required and if the governments of the states continue to come out of the hands of the Congress, then like the Lok Sabha, there will be a danger of getting the status of the main opposition party in front of it in the Rajya Sabha. It is worth noting that in the last two Lok Sabhas, it is out of the status of the main opposition party. However, the condition of Congress will be somewhat fine in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha to be held in July.
BJP will get benefit in Uttar Pradesh
In the Rajya Sabha elections to be held in July, the BJP will get more MPs in the Rajya Sabha despite the reduction in its MLAs in Uttar Pradesh. Actually, BJP is going to get this benefit due to the very weak Congress and BSP. The term of 11 MPs is ending in UP, out of which BJP has five MPs.
Considering the number of BJP in the current assembly, seven of its MPs are set to be elected. With manipulation, she can also win the eighth MP. On the other hand, the main opposition party in the state will go to three seats in the account of SP. The term of three SP MPs is coming to an end. So she will not be in any kind of profit or loss.
