A special POCSO court in Maharashtra’s Pune district has sentenced a man guilty of raping and killing a two-and-a-half-year-old girl to death. Sanjay Deshmukh, Principal District Judge, POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) court convicted Sanjay Baban Katkar (38).
According to Public Prosecutor Vilas Pathare, the convict had abducted the girl on February 15, 2021. He then raped her and then strangled her to death. There were 11 bite marks on the girl’s body.
Charges were framed against Baban Katkar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act. The judge, in his order, said that accused Sanjay Baban Katkar has been sentenced to death for the offense punishable under section 6 of POCSO and he should be hanged.
The prosecutor said the case was tried in a speedy court and Baban was convicted within a year. He said the court recorded the statements of 17 witnesses in the case and decided on the basis of detailed evidence.
