Wasim Ahmed/Aligarh: The holy month of Ramadan will start from March 11 and continue till April 9, 2024. These 30 days are considered very sacred. All people who believe in Islam observe a fast during this period, which is called Roza. However, according to the Holy Quran, it is not necessary for sick people to fast. But many people keep fast for the whole month even after having diabetes. However, in case of sugar problem, one should not compromise with food and drink. But by keeping some things in mind, diabetic patients can also keep fast.
The number of hours of fasting in Ramadan depends on sunrise and sunset. During fasting, nothing is eaten from the first light of the morning till the sun sets. Long intervals between meals can cause changes in the digestive system inside the body which can cause problems for diabetic patients. To avoid such problems, diabetic patients can consult their doctor. Aligarh Muslim University has issued helpline numbers 9027502774,7455041636 for diabetes patients in this holy month of Ramzan.
What is hypoglycemia?
Director of Rajiv Gandhi Center for Diabetes, JN Medical College, Prof. Shilu Shafiq Siddiqui says that a person suffering from diabetes can also fast, but consultation with a doctor is necessary so that there is no negative impact on health. There is a lot of change in sugar level during fasting. Due to which the patient may get hypoglycemia, it is a sign of sudden low blood sugar and the patient may faint or have a seizure. Which means a sudden increase in sugar in the blood which can cause weakness, thirst, headache and blurred vision. This problem can be managed by proper monitoring of insulin.
Keep these things in mind
⦁ If diabetic patients are fasting during Ramadan, then they must check their blood sugar before starting.
⦁ Dehydration during fasting is a common and serious risk especially faced by diabetic patients. In such a situation, consume enough lemon water, buttermilk, coconut water, melon, fresh fruit juice with low sugar and rose syrup.
⦁ For type one and type two diabetic patients or those who need to take insulin continuously, it is important to monitor their blood glucose after short intervals.
⦁ If the patient’s sugar is less than 70 or reaches more than 300, he should break the fast immediately.
