New Delhi. A petition was filed in the Supreme Court to reduce the duration of LLB studies from five years to three years after 12th. This matter came before the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud. The Chief Justice expressed displeasure over this petition. He refused to hear it, after which the petitioner withdrew his appeal and the case was quashed.
The petition said that it sought directions to the Central Government and the Bar Council of India to constitute an expert committee to explore the feasibility of conducting a three-year LLB course instead of the existing five-year LLB course after class 12th. Was. A bench of CJI Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala said the five-year LLB (Bachelor of Law) course is “functioning fine” and there is no need to tinker with it.
After hearing some arguments of senior lawyer Vikas Singh, appearing for petitioner Ashwini Upadhyay, the CJI said, “The petition is allowed to be withdrawn. After all, why do a three year course? They can start practicing (law) only after high school!” The CJI said that admittedly there are less than five years to study law.
The senior advocate said that even in the UK, the law course is of three years and in India, the five-year LLB course is “disappointing for the poor, especially girls. The CJI disagreed with the arguments and said that this time 70 percent women came to the district judiciary and now more girls are taking up law.
Singh sought permission to withdraw the PIL in this regard with freedom to give representation to the Bar Council of India (BCI). The bench rejected this and only allowed the withdrawal of the PIL.
