But the hanging of Bhagat Singh and his companions Rajguru and Sukhdev is one of the biggest and important events of this day recorded in the history of India. Revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on 23 March in the year 1931 during the Indian independence movement.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has declared March 23 as a state holiday, the martyrdom day of great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. He made this announcement in the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday. The House also passed a resolution to install the statues of Bhagat Singh, Dr. BR Ambedkar and the first Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the assembly.
On the concluding day of the assembly session, Mann proposed to declare Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom day as a holiday in the state. To this, Congress MLA Amarinder Singh Raja Waring said that instead of declaring a holiday, it would be better if the students and staff in the school, college were told about the life and sacrifice of Bhagat Singh.
