Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has summoned senior party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy to the court on a petition filed by BJP Delhi unit spokesperson Tejinder Pal Singh Bagga. Bagga has alleged that Swamy has defamed him by making false remarks against him in one of his tweets. This has dented his reputation.
The order issued by the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmendra Singh said that there are sufficient grounds for initiating proceedings against Swamy in the petition. Bagga has claimed in his complaint that in September last, Subramanian Swamy had written wrong things against him in one of his tweets. Swamy had alleged in a tweet that Bagga had been jailed several times from the Mandir Marg police station in New Delhi before joining the BJP. The police have caught him several times for petty offences. Swamy made these allegations by tweeting on September 28, 2021.
Bagga, in his testimony, has termed Swamy’s allegations as false and said that it was done with an intention to damage his reputation. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmendra Singh said that Sandeep Kumar, sub-inspector of Mandir Marg police station, corroborated the statement of the complainant and filed a report. The court further observed that this clearly shows that Swamy had tweeted without verifying the statement and it is sufficient to create doubts about the old life and character of the complainant.
Delhi BJP’s head of media relations and spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor and Delhi Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha vice-president Shashi Yadav said they had sought an explanation from Bagga on learning of the tweet. Bagga has also said in his complaint that neither an FIR nor any written complaint has been lodged against him at Mandir Marg police station. He has never been arrested in any case.
