Just before the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections, the Modi government at the Center demanded a stay on the elections, saying that the three municipal corporations would be integrated for the development of the capital. The government also brought a bill in the Parliament regarding this. Participating in the discussion on the ‘Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022’ bill in Rajya Sabha, Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh strongly opposed the bill saying that it did not bring about integration for the development of the Municipal Corporation. Rather, this bill had to be brought by the BJP because of the fear of its own defeat in the elections.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh said in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that the central government is afraid of Kejriwal. Attacking PM Modi, he said that “PM ran away from elections with a chest of 56 inches”. He asked the Center to rename the bill for integration of the three municipal corporations in the national capital as “Kejriwal Phobia Bill”. Along with this, he alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has brought this bill to avoid the corporation elections.
He claimed that the Center wants to control the three municipal corporations here to prevent Arvind Kejriwal’s party from coming to power. He said, “If you do not want to contest elections, want to run away from elections, then I would suggest you to name this bill as Kejriwal Phobia Bill. This bill is writing the story of your cowardice… you have made Delhi a center of corruption.
The bill was passed by the House by voice vote after the reply of Home Minister Amit Shah. Lok Sabha has already passed it. Taking a jibe at the Aam Aadmi Party, Home Minister Shah, in response to the discussion on the bill, said that if this attitude continues, they should not lose the Delhi government claiming to win in the municipal corporation. Accusing the AAP government of Delhi of treating three municipal corporations step-motherly, he said that it is torturing the corporations and the people of Delhi are being harassed by it.
Shah termed as baseless the fact that the Bharatiya Janata Party government, beset by the fear of defeat, wants to postpone the elections. He questioned the opposition whether there was a fear of losing the opposition if elections were held after six months.
