Srinagar: A sarpanch was shot dead by terrorists in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. Officials gave this information. This is the third incident in Jammu and Kashmir this month when terrorists have killed a local elected representative.
“Terrorists shot Shabbir Ahmed Mir near his house at around 8.50 pm in Adura area of Kulgam district of south Kashmir,” an official said. He said Mir was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Mir was an independent sarpanch.
Officials said the area has been cordoned off and the search for the attackers is on. Leaders of various political parties have strongly condemned the killing of Sarpanch. National Conference Vice President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, “Shocked by the killing of Sarpanch Shabbir Ahmed Mir. Political activists are killed, we express our condolences, life goes on and then the same thing happens. Sadly, nothing changes.”
Omar Abdullah said, “I can only express my condolences to Shabbir’s family and I pray that he gets a place in heaven. I wish his death was the last. But sadly it will not happen.” People’s Conference chief Sajjad Lone said in a tweet, “Strongly condemn the killing of a Sarpanch in Kulgam. Killers rot in hell.”
Bharatiya Janata Party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit spokesperson Altaf Thakur condemned the killing of the sarpanch, terming it as a barbaric and cowardly act. “This is an attack on democracy and such attacks will not be tolerated,” he said. Apart from this, leaders of other political parties have also condemned the killing of Sarpanch. (agency)
