The country’s first Dalit woman chief minister Mayawati is all set to reach her lowest rung in Uttar Pradesh politics. Till 4 pm, BSP was leading in only 1 seat and its vote share was 12.75%. This is just one percentage point more than its (BSP) all-time low of 11.12% votes in 1993. In the 2007 assembly elections, the BSP formed the government and the BSP got 206 seats, while the vote share of the BSP was 30.43%.
Even in the 2012 assembly elections, when the BSP was defeated, the BSP got 26% of the vote in that election too. In the 2017 election too, the BSP won just 19 seats, but the party’s vote share was 22.33%. Mayawati, 66, is popularly known as Behenji across the country and became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1995. However, the government fell after a few months. In the 2007 elections, BSP chief Mayawati had given the slogan of Sarvajan Hitay – Sarvajan Sukhay and it is believed that this slogan was amazing that apart from the backwards, a large number of Brahmins also joined the BSP and for the first time in the state, the BSP got an absolute majority. government was formed. However, Mayawati’s tenure was also surrounded by many controversies. During her tenure, Mayawati got many parks built, for which her opposition parties keep targeting her.
Before the 2017 assembly elections, the BSP suffered several major setbacks, as a result of which the BSP was reduced to just 19 seats. Many leaders left the party, due to which the BSP had to bear the loss in the elections. Among the leaders who left the party were Swami Prasad Maurya, who later became a minister in the Yogi government.
BSP supremo Mayawati did not appear very active in the 2022 assembly elections and addressed only 18 election public meetings. Just a day before the counting of votes, Mayawati took a surprising step by declaring her brother Anand Kumar as the party’s vice-president and nephew Akash Anand as the national coordinator.
