Displeased with SCO event
If China affairs experts are to be believed, the absence from the G-20 summit shows China’s discomfort towards this platform. It is behaving in contrast to its participation in other fora such as BRICS and SCO. According to those who understand China, if India had personally organized the SCO summit, Jinping would have been in Delhi to a large extent. Jinping attaches great importance to this China and Russia-backed organization. India had initially planned a summit but later decided to hold it virtually.
Pressure on China in G20
Ashok Kant, who was India’s ambassador to China, told The Hindu newspaper, ‘In BRICS, Jinping feels more comfortable because its agenda and outcome are influenced by China. Whereas in the G20, there is a lot of pressure on China. The absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin means more pressure on China. He further said that Chinese people feel that they have too much control over BRICS and SCO.
Situation on LAC
Many experts consider the status of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) as the reason for Jinping not coming to India. According to him, not attending the summit expresses China’s displeasure. Relations between India and China are not good at this time. India has clearly said that until peace is not restored on LAC, relations cannot be normal. At the same time, China also believes that India has ‘politicized’ the G20. Whereas it should be limited to economic issues only. Issues like Ukraine war should not be raised from this forum.
deliberate decision
Ashok Kant says that this decision of Jinping is ‘surprising’. Jinping had attended all the previous G-20 summits. He also virtually attended the G20 summit in Italy in the year 2021. On 24 August went to Johannesburg, South Africa and marked his presence at the BRICS Summit. In such a situation, there is no reason for health reasons. Just last week, Jinping met with the President of Benin and also addressed an important conference on trade via video. So it is a deliberate decision.
