Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents in the country. He said that every year five lakh accidents take place in the country, which is the highest in the world.
Through video conferencing at the International Conference on Machine Vision and Augmented Intelligence (MAI) 2022, he said that road safety is a major cause of concern across the world. This is a big challenge for developing countries like India. Every year 1.5 lakh people lose their lives and three lakh are seriously injured due to road accidents in India. It is unfortunate that 70 per cent of the people who lost their lives in road accidents are in the age group of 18 to 45 years. That is why road safety is at the top of the priorities of our government. He also marked areas for the use of AI.
New advanced traffic monitoring system implemented
Gadkari informed that the Central Government has implemented a new Advanced Traffic Monitoring System (ATMS). We are doing automatic identification of number plates with NPR system for legal information, toll collection etc. All these automated and digital processes are aimed at improving road safety and real-time accident management.
