Rolls Royce Electric Aircraft: You are all familiar with the increasing demand for vehicles in the electric vehicle segment, but now it seems that Electrify is making its way to aircraft, not just vehicles. The fully electric aircraft of luxury car maker Rolls-Royce will be ready in three to five years. This was confirmed by the company’s electrical division president Rob Watson at the Singapore Airshow on February 14.
Watson said, “You can see the typical 8- to 18-seat aircraft in urban and regional air mobility becoming a real possibility over the next three to five years.” And as Watson reports in Bloomberg, Rolls-Royce’s first commercial application is the P-Volt 600 kWh-battery system for an 8- to 18-seater, which can travel up to 80 knots. ,
Electric plane will fly up to 400km
He added that the aircraft’s range will continue to improve with improved battery technology and that it “may eventually be able to fly 400 km in the 2030s”. “Now, we need to scale it up for economic impact”, said Watson, expressing confidence in the technology. He does not expect, however, that Airbus or Boeing narrowbody craft will go completely electric. “If you want to fly hundreds of people and thousands of miles, which is a single-aisle market, a battery is never going to do that because you will be limited only by the weight of the battery.

Many startups are moving in this direction
Several players in the aviation industry, including startups, are currently working on low-carbon aircraft with electric, hybrid electric, hydrogen or SAF models. Watson, however, says it is “in talks with suppliers for the battery cell” as it nears final stages. The company will not manufacture battery cells even though it designs and assembles the packs.
