Jakarta: Ruang Volcano in Indonesia appears to be active and continuous activities are being seen in it. Indonesian authorities have issued a tsunami alert on Wednesday after an eruption at the Ruang volcano spread ash over a large area. Officials have instructed more than 11 thousand people to leave the area. The Indonesia Volcanology and Geological Disaster Center said the volcano, located north of Sulawesi island, has experienced at least five major eruptions in the past 24 hours.
tsunami may come
Authorities have raised the volcano alert level to the highest. At least 800 residents had left the area by Wednesday. Authorities have urged tourists and other people to stay at least six kilometers away from Ruang Volcano. Officials are concerned that part of the volcano could collapse into the ocean, causing a tsunami, as happened in the 1871 eruption.
Explosions are happening due to earthquake
Heruningtyas Desi, an Indonesian official who monitors the volcano, told on Wednesday (17-04-2024) that the eruption at Mount Ruang is being caused by the recent earthquakes on the island. Dangerous and “explosively hot clouds” were visible up to 1.8 km (1.1 mi) high in the sky from the mountain. He had said that a big explosion could also happen. No activity has been allowed within four kilometers of the crater.
How many active volcanoes in Indonesia
Let us tell you that Indonesia is spread in the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is an area of high seismic activity. This region lies over several tectonic plates. Earlier in the month of December 2023, there was an explosion in Marapi volcano in which 11 climbers died. There are 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia. (AP)
