Kyiv. Mariupol Mayor Vadim Boychenko said on Friday that Russian forces were shelling the Ukrainian city every 30 minutes.
In a social media post, the mayor acknowledged that the past few days have been particularly difficult for the city as Russian forces have been “ruthlessly and deliberately shelling residential buildings” in the strategic port city.
He also accused Russia of obstructing the distribution of humanitarian aid from Zaporizhzhya to Mariupol. He said the forces attacked convoys and the ‘Green Corridor’ for civilian evacuation.
According to preliminary estimates by Mariupol’s city council, about 1,300 civilians have died in the 10 days that it has been blocked.
Describing the Mariupol situation as a “humanitarian catastrophe”, Reunification Minister Vereshuk said Russia has consistently hindered the planned evacuation of civilians from the strategic port city.
Minister Vereshuk said, “The worst is in Mariupol-Zaporizhya. No one has been evacuated. Not even a drop of water has reached the thirsty people. Today 300,000 people suffer from lack of water, cold and hunger. “
