Kyiv: Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that his offensive in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region is aimed at creating a “buffer zone” and has no plans to capture the city. Speaking to reporters on Friday during a visit to Harbin, China, Putin said Russia launched the attacks in the Kharkiv region in response to Ukraine’s shelling of the Belgorod region. This is Putin’s first comment since the attack began on May 10.
What is Russia’s plan?
Putin told reporters that the strikes were launched in the Kharkiv region in response to Ukrainian shelling in Russia’s Belgorod region. “I have said publicly that if this continues we will be forced to create a security zone, a risk-free zone,” he said. Putin said Russian troops were “advancing every day according to plan”. He said that Russia currently has no plans to capture Kharkiv.
Russia is ready for talks
Ukrainian soldiers are fighting to stop Russian troops advancing into the Kharkiv region. Responding harshly to Ukraine’s upcoming peace conferences, Putin said it was a futile attempt to impose conditions for a peaceful settlement on Russia. He said Russia was ready to negotiate, but rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace formula. He said potential peace talks could be based on a draft agreement that Russia and Ukraine negotiated during the Istanbul talks in 2022. (AP)
