New Delhi / Moscow. Russia announces to block Instagram. Earlier parent company Meta said it would allow calls for violence against Russian troops in the context of the Ukrainian invasion. As reported by Vox.com, “The communications agency of the Russian government announced that it will block Instagram in Russia from March 14.”
Russia’s state media regulator Roskomnadzor said in a statement, “Based on the demand of the General Prosecutor’s Office, access to Instagram will be limited in the territory of the Russian Federation.”
Instagram’s top executive Adam Mosseri said that 80 million users in the country will be deprived of Instagram.
“This decision will keep 80 million people in Russia from interacting with each other and the rest of the world because 80 percent of people in Russia follow Instagram accounts outside their country,” Mosseri said in a tweet.
Roskomnadzor blocked access to Facebook as recently as October 2020, citing 26 cases of discrimination against Russian media and information resources by Facebook.
Earlier, Russia said it would introduce a new law against spreading fake news about the country’s armed forces, which could carry up to 15 years in prison.
Shortly after the bill went ahead, the BBC announced it would suspend journalism operations within the country.
Facebook’s decision follows similar moves by Google, Twitter and Snapchat, which have all blocked ads in Russia.
