A fire at sea in a Russian nuclear power ship has caused panic. Russia’s emergency ministry said a fire broke out on board a nuclear-powered container ship and icebreaker in the northern port of Murmansk, although it was quickly brought under control. The cause of the fire has not been given by the ministry. If the fire had not been controlled in time, it could have caused an explosion in the reactor. However, it has also not been made clear at what distance the ship was from the reactor.
The fire broke out in a cabin of the Sevmorput ship late Sunday night and spread to an area of about 30 square meters, the Russian ministry said in a statement on the Telegram app. It was told that the fire was brought under control about an hour after the initial information and there were no casualties. The statement did not disclose what caused the fire or how close the ship was to the reactor. Sevmorput is the only nuclear cargo ship in service at 260 meters (830 ft) long. It is one of Russia’s deadliest warships. It is also called the pride of the Black Sea. (AP)
Sevmorput was built in 1988
The regional branch of Russia’s emergency ministry said on December 25 that a fire broke out aboard a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker in the northern Russian port of Murmansk, but firefighters quickly extinguished it. The fire broke out in one of the cabins of the ship, named Sevmorput, while it was docked in port. “There was no threat to critical support systems or the reactor facility,” Atomflot, the Russian state-owned company that deploys a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers, told Russian state-controlled news outlet RIA Novosti. Sevmorput, operated by Atomflot, is a nuclear-powered icebreaker and cargo ship, the only such ship in Russia’s fleet, according to Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear ministry. It was originally constructed in 1988, but later modernized.
