What is El Nino?
El Nino is a climate phenomenon in which the sea surface in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean becomes 4 to 5 degrees Celsius warmer than normal. Due to this heat, the path and speed of sea winds start changing. Due to the change, the weather cycle is affected and the winds blowing from east to west weaken. Along with this, the warm water of the western Pacific Ocean region starts moving eastwards along the equator. This has a direct impact on climate change. Due to this, there may be heavy rains in many countries and drought in many places. El Nino affected the world the most in the years 1982-83 and 1997-98. Due to the El Nino of 1982–83, sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical regions were 9–18 degrees Celsius higher than normal. Whereas in the year 1997-98, it caused drought in Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines. Not only this, heavy rains and floods caused devastation in Peru and California.
