With this win, she will now present her claim in the 55kg weight category of the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham. Chanu expressed his happiness on his official Twitter handle after the victory. He shared the picture along with the medal and wrote, “I have qualified for the Commonwealth Games 2022. Six months of intense training and my never ending love for the sport is still paying off.”
Participating in the 55 kg weight category for the first time at the Singapore Weightlifting International tournament, Chanu lifted a total of 191 kg (86 kg and 105 kg). During this, she did not face any kind of challenge and she easily finished at the top. This can be gauged from the fact that Jessica Sevastenko of Australia finished second while lifting a total of 167 kg (77 kg + 90 kg), which was 24 kg less than Chanu. Ellie Cassandra Engelbert of Malaysia finished third with a best effort of 165kg (75kg + 90kg).
The other three Indian lifters competing on the first day of the event – Sanket Sagar (55kg), Rishikant Singh (55kg) and Bindyarani Devi (59kg) also qualified for the Commonwealth Games. Bindyarani Devi won gold in 59kg, while Sanket won gold in 55kg and Rishikant Singh won silver.
Chanu, who pulled out of the World Championships in December, was the first competitive event since her historic silver medal-winning performance at the Tokyo Olympics last year. The 27-year-old had qualified for the Commonwealth Games in 49kg based on the Commonwealth rankings, but Chanu opted for 55kg to increase India’s chances of winning more gold medals.
