Chennai. The Sri Lankan Navy arrested four Indian fishermen in the early hours of Tuesday near Kachcha Tivu for allegedly violating the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). Fishermen organizations in Tamil Nadu have alleged that the Sri Lankan Navy has also seized a mechanized boat used by fishermen.
Since January, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 87 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu. While 42 fishermen were released after the intervention of the Indian government, the rest are still lodged in jails in Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
Fishermen’s organizations and fishermen’s families have been protesting for the past two days at Mandapam and Ramanathapuram against the arrest and detention of Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu Fishermen’s Association leader S.J. “Tamil Nadu fishermen are regularly arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy and both the Indian government and the Tamil Nadu government are silent,” Jesudas told -AnyTV News.
He said that the Sri Lankan Navy has seized mechanized boats of fishermen on earlier occasions and now another fishing boat has also been seized. The fishermen’s leader said the boats were being auctioned by Sri Lankan authorities through advertisements in local newspapers.
Mary Joseph, a fisherman from Rameswaram, told -AnyTV News: “The situation here is very bad and our fishermen are hesitant to venture into the sea fearing an attack by the Sri Lankan Navy.”
He said that the Government of India should act immediately and put an end to this issue forever.
