What will happen now
The captured fishermen and their boats will now be handed over to the Fisheries Inspectorates of Mannar and Malady for further legal action. The Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 23 Indian boats and 178 Indian fishermen so far in 2024 and handed them over to the authorities for legal action.
let’s fire
The issue of fishermen has been a cause of dispute in the relations between India and Sri Lanka. In several alleged incidents of illegal intrusion into Sri Lankan territorial waters, Sri Lankan naval personnel even opened fire on Indian fishermen and seized their boats in the Palk Strait.
Fishermen unknowingly cross the maritime border
Palk Strait is a narrow strip of water separating Sri Lanka from Tamil Nadu which is a fishing ground for fishermen of both the countries. Fishermen from both countries are often arrested when they unknowingly reach each other’s maritime boundary. In 2023, the Sri Lankan Navy caught 240 Indian fishermen with 35 boats for allegedly fishing in its territorial waters. Language
