Lucknow. Ever thought that the antonym of ‘tree’ would be the opposite of 60? Students are facing strange questions in the ongoing annual examinations in government schools of Uttar Pradesh. A English question paper in a school in Prayagraj asked class five students a question regarding trees, while an English question paper in Bhadohi district asked class seven students to write 60 as opposed to 60.
At the same time, in Prayagraj, Class V students were asked to identify them among the figures in an English question paper.
While the question of Mathematics in the English paper should not be there, the fact remains that there were no marks in the options for this question.
This matter has now turned into a big controversy and now an inquiry has been ordered into this matter.
Director General of School Education, Anamika Singh said, “Despite COVID and elections, we have managed to conduct the annual examination after two years. I have directed the UPBEC secretary to examine the issues related to the questions and take appropriate action on the same. “
Meanwhile, UP Junior High School Teachers’ Association office-bearer Sanjay Kanojia said, “Exams are being conducted to assess the level of understanding of the lessons by the students, but the purpose behind this exercise has been lost.”
The responsibility of preparing the question paper for the exam is given to the Basic Education Officer (BSA), who recruits teachers in the District Institute of Education and Technology (DIET) for paper setting.
The papers should be prepared on the model prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).
More than 1.6 crore students enrolled in 1.3 lakh schools affiliated by UPBEC are appearing in these exams.
A senior education official said, “One mistake can ensure proper evaluation in the question paper. Even though no student may fail till class eight, these mistakes are pointing fingers at teachers.”
He said that the question papers should be moderated to ensure the accuracy of the questions.
Schools in many districts have reported mistakes in the question papers. A teacher from Gorakhpur said, “We got only three papers for a class of 50 students. So, we were forced to write questions on the black board.”
Teachers said that they have no clarity on how a wrong question should be corrected. A teacher said, “We have no idea whether we should give full marks to the wrong question or it should be cancelled. Examinations in government schools are just a formality as instructions to promote all students to the next class Huh.”
