new Delhi. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the stranded Indian students, who were evacuated from the Ukrainian city of Sumy, are returning to India on Friday. Jaishankar said on Twitter that evacuating the students from Sumi was “particularly challenging”.
“Operation Ganga, carried out under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has happened because of both leadership and commitment,” he said.
“We are grateful to all those who fulfilled its objectives. Our special gratitude to the authorities of Ukraine and Russia, as well as to the Red Cross for the evacuation assistance,” the minister said.
Thanking the nations, Jaishankar said, “Ukraine’s neighbors – Romania, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Moldova – extended extraordinary support to us during the evacuation.”
“We are grateful to the NGOs, individual volunteers, corporates, our airlines and the Indian Air Force who worked tirelessly in this exercise.”
Jaishankar ‘to his four ministerial colleagues, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, Kiren Rijiju, Hardeep Singh Puri and General (retd) VK. Singh’s contribution, saying that his ‘ground presence made a huge difference’.
The Minister also appreciated the efforts of ‘Indian Embassy in Ukraine and Team MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) for their dedicated efforts in the face of difficult conflicts’.
On Tuesday, Indian students were evacuated from Sumi and taken to Poltava via the humanitarian corridor. The next day, he was sent to Lviv and from there he moved to Poland on Wednesday and Thursday.
He will reach India in three flights, including a C-17 Globemaster of the Indian Air Force.
Sumy, a city in northeastern Ukraine, has been hit by heavy shelling and bombing by Russia, which launched its military offensive on Kyiv on February 24.
Around 700 Indian students were trapped in the city amid Russian attacks.
On Tuesday, Russia and Ukraine declared a ceasefire and provided a humanitarian corridor.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine and requested them to provide a safe route for the evacuation of the remaining Indian nationals.
