new Delhi. The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to give any specific date for hearing a plea challenging the Karnataka High Court order which had dismissed all the petitions seeking a direction to allow wearing of hijab in classrooms.
Senior advocate Devdutt Kamat mentioned a matter on behalf of one of the petitioners, a Muslim student, and sought immediate listing of the matter. Kamat insisted that the examinations were approaching and urged the court for an urgent hearing on the matter.
Chief Justice N.V. A bench headed by Raman said it had nothing to do with the examination. The Chief Justice asked Kamat not to sensationalise the matter.
Kamat argued that girl students were not being admitted in schools and their one year would be wasted.
On 16 March also, the Supreme Court refused to urgently hear a petition challenging the Karnataka High Court order, which held that the wearing of hijab by Muslim women is not a part of the religious practice required in the Islamic faith.
