Summary
The opinion of the Western countries about the CSTO so far is that it is not a fair organization. Therefore, there is doubt about whether he will be able to play an impartial role in a dispute like Ukraine. But if Russia has floated this new proposal, then it cannot be taken lightly.
Russia is considering a plan to send peacekeeping forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) to the Donbas region of Ukraine to handle the deteriorating situation. The CSTO includes several former Soviet republics, including Russia. Broadly speaking, it is an organization of countries coming to Central Asia. The CSTO team was sent there during the recent anti-government protests in Kazakhstan.
According to the media, Russia understands that the deployment of the CSTO team in Donbass will help in maintaining peace there. But observers say such a deployment can only happen if Ukraine and the West agree to it. Western countries are less likely to accept this proposal. The US has previously alleged that the CSTO is actually a military organization serving the interests of Russia.
Ukraine is not a member of CSTO
CSTO Secretary General Stanisval Jass has confirmed this Russian plan. In an interview to a news agency, he discussed the steps that the CSTO can take to maintain stability in Ukraine. He said- ‘We have huge possibilities in our hands. We understand that we have to be very careful about such steps.
Jas said the CSTO is capable of deploying troops on a large scale in areas prone to disturbances. He said- ‘You trust us. We can send as many soldiers as we need there. If three thousand soldiers are needed, we can send. If there is a need for 17,000 soldiers, then we can do this deployment also.
Ukraine is not a member of the CSTO. So far, CSTO troops have been deployed only in the member countries of this military treaty organization. So the deployment of the CSTO’s troops in Ukraine will set a new precedent. Analysts speculate that the Secretary General of the CSTO would not have made this statement without the consent of Russia. Rather, it is more likely that he would have done this at the behest of Russia.
Doubts on the role of CSTO

Therefore, there is doubt about whether he will be able to play an impartial role in a dispute like Ukraine. But if Russia has floated this new proposal, then it cannot be taken lightly. Rather, it has also raised the fear that Russia may unilaterally try to deploy CSTO troops in the Donbas area.
Anti-government protests erupted in Kazakhstan in January. Then the soldiers of CSTO were sent there. They included soldiers from many countries including Russia. At that time, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the deployment of the CSTO team in Kazakhstan was malicious. He had also expressed doubts that these soldiers would not be returned from there soon. However, within a week, the CSTO team had returned from Kazakhstan.
