new Delhi. The tussle in Kerala Congress has reached Sonia Gandhi’s doorstep as state president K. Sudhakaran met the party president on Thursday and discussed the party’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat.
While the Congress in Kerala is insisting on the name of M. Liju, the party’s central leader Krishnan Srinivasan wants it.
After the meeting, Sudhakaran said, “I have met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and discussed the nomination for the Rajya Sabha seat. Both want to promote the youth.”
Elections for three Rajya Sabha seats in Kerala are to be held on March 31. Among those retiring are 81-year-old Congress veteran A.K. Antony, K. Somprasad (CPI-M) and M.V. Shreyas Kumar, who leads the Left Front ally Loktantrik Janata Dal in Kerala.
With the ruling Pinarayi Vijayan government having an absolute majority in the 140-member assembly, it is a foregone conclusion that the Left Democratic Front will win two more Congress-led opposition.
Antony, two-time former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, State Congress President K. Sudhakaran and other senior leaders that he is not interested for another term.
Outgoing state party president and former Union ministers Mullapally Ramachandran and K.V. Thomas, who was deeply upset over not being given his current Ernakulam Lok Sabha seat in 2019. Thomas has met Sonia Gandhi, but sources say he has not received a positive reply from her.
