Musk and the government face off on import duty
Negotiations between Tesla and the government to reduce import duty have been stalled for a long time. Now more than a year has passed since this deadlock. Elon Musk wants the government to give exemption from import tax on bringing electric cars made by him to India before setting up Tesla’s factory in India, so that he can test the demand and response of his cars in the Indian market. However, the government has made it clear that if Tesla wants to sell cars in India, it will have to set up a factory here. She can take advantage of the government’s PLI scheme for this. Tesla’s electric cars that are made in China will not be sold in the Indian market.
