United Nations: An Indian has got an important responsibility in the United Nations. India’s Kamal Kishore has been made the representative of the United Nations Chief (UN). Kamal Kishore has been the top Indian official associated with disaster and climate risk management. Now he has started his tenure as Special Representative (Disaster Risk Reduction) of UN Chief Antonio Guterres. On March 28, Guterres appointed Kishore (55) as his Special Representative (Disaster Risk Reduction) and head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
Kishore was earlier associated with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Now he has replaced Japan’s Mami Mizutori in the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction Office. UNDRR welcomed the arrival of Kishore on 20 May, who began his tenure as the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (Disaster Risk Reduction) (SRSG) and head of UNDRR. The office gave this information in a statement on Thursday. Kishore said that UNDRR plays an important role in unifying the global effort to reduce disaster risks in the light of increasing threats. He said that he is hopeful to take forward the progress made so far.

Kamal Kishore said, “UNDRR’s ambition matches the scale of the problem.” He praised the leadership of former SRSG Mizutori and thanked UNDRR Director Paolo Altobrito for serving as Acting SRSG prior to his arrival. Kishore has served as the Head of the National Disaster Management Authority of India since 2015. He chaired the G20 Task Force on Disaster Risk Reduction during India’s presidency of the G20. Prior to joining NDMA, Kishore spent nearly 13 years with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Geneva, New Delhi and New York.
During this period, he led the international campaign for inclusion of disaster resilience topics in the Sustainable Development Goals and for a global team for disaster risk reduction for countries with UNDP programs. (Language)
