Keeping in mind the importance of Delhi Metro, the Delhi government has earmarked Rs 500 crore for Delhi Metro in its 2024-25 budget presented on Monday to strengthen the public transport infrastructure. This step has been taken when Finance Minister Atishi cited that since 2014, the number of metro passengers traveling every day has increased from 24 lakh to more than 60 lakh. It highlighted the rapid increase in the number of passengers. Presenting a comprehensive budget with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore, Atishi stressed the government’s commitment to provide top-notch public transport facilities to every Delhiite, Financial Express reported.
The country’s busiest rapid transit system
According to the news, under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, they saw significant improvements in the sector. Delhi Metro has expanded significantly. It is India’s largest and busiest rapid transit system. From a network spanning 193 kilometers with 143 stations in March 2015, its length has now doubled to 393 kilometres, serving 288 stations in the capital region. The reach of the metro has extended to every corner of the city, including important border points like Tikri, Samaypur, Badarpur and Shiv Vihar.
Participation of both Government of India and Delhi
Established in May 1995, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation operates the metro system, which is a joint effort between the Government of India and the Government of Delhi. The investment of funds signals a concerted effort to further enhance connectivity and meet the growing transportation needs of the bustling metropolis. With funds allocated for metro expansion, Delhiites can look forward to smoother and more efficient commute as the capital cements its position as an icon of urban development in the country.
DMRC was registered on 3 May 1995
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) was registered on 3 May 1995 under the Companies Act, 1956 with equal equity participation of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) and the Central Government. DMRC opened its first corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari on December 25, 2002. Subsequently, the first phase of construction of 65 kilometers of metro lines was completed in 2005, two years and nine months ahead of schedule. Delhi-NCR has a vast network of approximately 392.44 km with 288 stations (including Noida-Greater Noida Corridor and Rapid Metro, Gurugram) in record time.
