What is the history of Rajpath?
In the year 1911, when the British shifted their capital from Kolkata to Delhi. After this the responsibility of designing the new capital was given to Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. The Rajpath was completed in the year 1920 and then it came to be called Kingsway i.e. ‘King’s Way’.
After this, in the year 1905, a new road was built in London in honor of George V’s father which was named Kingsway. The road built in the name of this in Delhi was also named Kingsway. George V came to Delhi in 1911 and it was he who announced the new capital.
At the same time, its name was changed after independence. Later it was named ‘Rajpath’ instead of Kingsway. However, this was the Hindi translation of Kingsway itself. The Republic Day parade is held here on Rajpath for 75 years since independence. At the same time, now its name has been changed to ‘Dutypath’ by the Central Government.
