What is the heat index of IMD?
The IMD Heat Index is now available as a map. In this the ‘feel’ temperature is indicated by color codes. Green colored areas mean that the temperature there will be less than 35 degree Celsius. In areas with red color, the temperature can go up to 55 degrees. According to Dr Mohapatra, the map takes into account the forecast temperature and humidity levels of different places at 2.30 pm as the heat is at its peak at that time.
However, this index is currently a ‘work in progress’. It will be made better with time. Currently, the risk factors that are indicated by color codes are based on American scales. These will be adjusted according to India as Indians have more heat tolerance.
IMD’s heat index will improve further
IMD is about to include more parameters in its heat index. Night time temperatures and consecutive high heat days prior to the forecast will also be made the basis of the analysis. These also affect the health of the people.
According to Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, ‘Keeping all this in mind, IMD wants to develop its own heat index which will better represent the factors that lead to heat wave deaths in India.
