Even after cutting the prices of petrol and diesel, fuel is being sold above Rs 100 per liter in many cities. Due to which the demand for CNG cars is increasing continuously. Recently the country’s largest automaker Maruti Suzuki currently has an order book of 2,80,000 cars, out of which 1,20,000 or say 43 per cent of the pending orders are for CNG models.
Demand for CNG-powered cars has skyrocketed over the past year, and Maruti Suzuki has been the biggest beneficiary, though the company continues to struggle with demand-supply due to semiconductor chip shortages.
Most in demand for Maruti Ertiga
According to the Auto Car website, the company’s 7-seater Ertiga CNG model is in highest demand, due to which its waiting period is also high. Ertiga accounts for 50 per cent or more than 60,000 units of the total CNG cars booked by the company’s customers. Due to which the demand of Atriga in the Indian market can be estimated.

Then there is the demand for the hugely popular city hatchback Wagon R CNG, which has an order book of 36,000. Apart from this, the Alto, S-Presso and Eeco available for private customers as well as Super Carry, Tour S and Tour M for the fleet segment are also part of the company’s total CNG orders.
56% growth in sales of CNG cars
According to industry data, sales of CNG cars in India have registered a growth of 56 per cent between April-November 2021, with a total of 1,36,357 passenger vehicles sold. While cars with 88,180 units registered a growth of 45 per cent, they contributed 65 per cent to the total CNG PV sales.

Meanwhile, the sale of UV vehicles witnessed a year-on-year growth of 90 per cent with 32,444 units. While the sales of the vans grew by over 64 per cent with 15,733 units.
