‘To bowl in India, you have to learn reverse swing bowling’
It was interesting to see the way Bumrah moved the ball in both directions and took the wickets of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Ollie Pope. The video clip of him bowling Pope with an inswinger yorker is going viral on social media. When Bumrah was asked about this in the press conference after the match, he said, ‘If you want to take wickets for India in first class cricket, then you will have to learn reverse swing bowling. Maybe I learned reverse swing before conventional swing because you play a lot of cricket on slow wickets. So you understand how you have to bowl here. You have to find a way, what are the areas where you can hit. That’s why you practice a lot like this in the nets and try to use it to take wickets.
Bumrah bowled 6781 balls and took 150 wickets.
On what he was thinking before dismissing Ollie Pope, who scored 196 runs in the second innings of the Hyderabad Test match, Bumrah said, ‘The ball was very hard at that time. Yes, there was some reverse swing at that time. In reverse swing you do not need to bowl a magic ball to every ball. I had bowled some outbound balls and the thought in my mind was, which ball should I bowl? But I had not bowled the yorker till then. So I thought let’s take a risk and I did and it swung quite a bit. I bowled it well and I am very happy with it. Bumrah has taken 150 wickets in the least number of balls. During this, he broke the record of compatriot Umesh Yadav. Bumrah achieved this feat with the help of 6781 balls. He took 5 wickets in an innings of Test for the 10th time.
