New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a visit to Bhutan on 22 and 23 March. Bhutan has given him its highest civilian honour. But the meaning of this visit of PM Modi was much more than this honour. The warmth of relations between India and Bhutan can be gauged from the fact that when Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was hosting a dinner in the honor of PM Modi at his residence Lingkana Palace, it did not seem that PM Modi was a member of the royal family. A rare and special emotional scene was witnessed here when Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a private dinner at the residence of the King of Bhutan, where they joined together as a family. PM Modi visited the Himalayan state on 22-23 March. This was the first time that an Indian leader was hosted at Lingkana Palace, the residence of Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. In the photos shared on Twitter, PM Modi can be seen sitting with King Wangchuck, Queen Jetsun Pema and their three children – Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, Prince Jigme Ugyen Wangchuck and Princess Sonam Yangden, who was born last year.

One of the pictures shows the warm and affectionate side of PM Modi, in which he is seen having an interesting conversation with Prince Ugyen and in the other, he is seen with both the princes. Prince Jigme Namgyel, born in 2016, who is seen in one of the pictures with PM Modi Standing with, are the heirs to the Bhutanese throne. This palace is important because King Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema welcomed the birth of their children here in the years 2016, 2020 and 2023.

During his third visit to Bhutan in a decade, PM Modi became the first foreign leader to be awarded Bhutan’s highest civilian honour, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, in recognition of his efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.

On receiving the award from King Wangchuk, PM Modi underlined that this is an honor given to the people of India and a testament to the excellent state of bilateral relations between the two countries. PM Modi also announced assistance of Rs 10,000 crore for the Himalayan nation over the coming five years and said India stands firmly with Bhutan in its efforts to achieve self-reliance and become a high-income nation. In another special gesture for PM Modi, both King Wangchuck and PM Tshering Tobgay came to see the leader at the airport after the official visit ended. Touched by the gesture, PM Modi said he was ‘honoured’ and thanked the wonderful people of Bhutan for their warmth and hospitality, adding that “India will always be a trusted friend and partner to Bhutan.”
