Preparations are being made for IPL 2024 in India. Meanwhile, one post is vacant for selector in BCCI. For which the names of three former players are coming to the fore. Former India spinner Nikhil Chopra, Delhi veteran Mithun Manhas and current junior selector Krishna Mohan are in the race to become the BCCI selector for the senior national team. The BCCI had released applications for a post in the five-member selection panel in January.
The post has been vacant for a long time
At present, the West Zone is represented by two persons, Salil Ankola and Chairman Ajit Agarkar. Ankola is likely to be dropped to make way for a selector from the northern region, which is not represented in the panel following the resignation of Chetan Sharma. Former Punjab cricketer Mohan, who is part of the junior selection panel since September 2021, is among the candidates who have applied for the job. Former Indian wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra has also presented his claim. The last date for applications was January 25 but with the IPL starting on Friday, the board still has enough time to fill the vacancy.
What experience is required to become a selector?
The Cricket Advisory Committee headed by Ashok Malhotra is expected to interview the shortlisted candidates in the near future. A BCCI source said that some strong candidates are in the race and they include Mithun, Chopra and Mohan. Mithun played 157 first-class matches for Delhi and was a regular in the IPL from 2010 to 2014. Recently, R Ashwin had opened up about Mithun’s special abilities with the bat ahead of his 100th Test in Dharamshala. Ratra, a Level 3 coach, was with the A team on the South Africa tour last year. Chopra, who played one Test and 39 ODI matches for India, is now a well-known commentator. The applicant must have played either 7 Tests or 30 first-class matches. Candidates with experience of 10 ODI or 20 First Class matches can also be considered.
