New Delhi. Acting on the instructions of anti-corruption body Lokpal, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday registered an FIR against former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra for asking questions about taking money.
Lokpal has issued instructions to the agency after receiving the findings of the CBI’s preliminary investigation on the allegations made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey against Moitra. The Lokpal directed the CBI to submit its findings in this case within six months after examining all aspects of the complaints against Moitra.
The Lok Sabha had expelled Moitra in December last year for “immoral conduct”. The former MP has challenged her expulsion in the Supreme Court and will again contest as the TMC candidate from Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal during the general elections.

Dubey had alleged that Moitra asked questions in the Lok Sabha in exchange for cash and gifts from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to target industrialist Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others. However Moitra has denied all the allegations.
The Lokpal bench said in the order, “The Lokpal finds that the allegations leveled against the respondent public servant are of very serious nature, most of which have solid evidence in support of them.”
The bench comprises Justice Abhilasha Kumari (judicial member) and members Archana Ramasundaram and Mahendra Singh. “Therefore, in our considered opinion, a thorough investigation is required to ascertain the truth,” the order said.
The order said that a public servant is bound to be honest in the discharge of his duties, no matter what post he holds. The Lokpal order said, “A public representative has a huge responsibility on his shoulders. Corruption is a disease which is adversely affecting the legislative, administrative, social and economic functioning of this democratic country.

“We direct the CBI to investigate all aspects of the allegations made in the complaint and submit a copy of the investigation report within six months from the date of this order,” the bench said in the order.
The order states that the CBI will file monthly reports regarding the status of the investigation.
