New Delhi. The draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was approved in the cabinet meeting of the Uttarakhand government on Sunday. The UCC bill will be introduced in the assembly session on February 6. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other ministers discussed UCC in the cabinet meeting. Dhami had called a cabinet meeting on Saturday to discuss UCC, but the discussion could not take place. A cabinet meeting was called at the Chief Minister’s residence at 6 pm on Sunday evening, where the draft of UCC was presented. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami discussed the bill with cabinet ministers.
Presentation of Uniform Civil Code was given in the cabinet meeting at CM residence. After this the Cabinet approved to table the bill in the Assembly. With the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand, the long standing disputes will come to an end. All persons will have equal rights under the UCC. The Dhami government started the process for UCC in May 2022 and a special committee was formed to prepare the draft. The tenure of the committee was extended four times, with the last extension coming on January 26, 2024. On February 2, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami extended the tenure of the committee by 15 days. The draft of the UCC was submitted to the Chief Minister on February 2. The UCC was expected to be discussed at the cabinet meeting on 3 February, but the draft was not presented. A special meeting was called on Sunday to seek cabinet approval on the draft. The Cabinet approved the preparation of the Bill and its presentation in the Assembly during the upcoming session starting from February 6.

Security arrangements have been tightened for the assembly session starting from February 5. Some organizations are protesting against the Uniform Civil Code and the police administration is on high alert. From February 5 to 8, Section 144 will remain in force within a radius of 300 meters around the Legislative Assembly complex. Prohibitory orders will remain in force for demonstrations and activities of organizations and communities within the designated area during the Legislative Assembly session. On February 6, two bills related to 36 percent reservation for UCC and state agitators will be presented. Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has made a special strategy on UCC.
