Amid government efforts to evacuate Indian citizens from war-torn Ukraine, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is likely to brief his ministry’s advisory committee in this regard on Thursday. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and MPs from other parties are the members of this committee. A number of issues, including Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the evacuation of Indians, are expected to be discussed during the meeting of the 21-member Foreign Affairs Consultative Committee, an MP said.
Along with the External Affairs Minister, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla is also expected to attend the meeting and brief the members. The committee also includes former ministers of state in the external affairs ministry and Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Shashi Tharoor. Ministers can preside over the advisory committees of their respective ministries, convene meetings. The main objective of these committees is to provide a forum for informal discussion between MPs and ministers and senior officials on the policies, principles and programs of the government and the manner in which they are implemented.
Shringla had on Monday briefed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs about Operation Ganga, which has been launched to evacuate Indian nationals from the Eastern European nation.
