Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, fighting for his country’s survival, has made a passionate appeal to the US to send more fighter jets and reduce oil imports from Russia so that his country can counter Russian military action. Zelensky said in a private video call to US lawmakers on Saturday that he may be seeing him alive for the last time. The President of Ukraine is present in the capital Kyiv, to the north of which there is a gathering of Russian armored troops.
Zelensky, seen in an army green shirt with the Ukrainian flag against the background of a white wall, said Ukraine needed to protect its airspace and that it was either a no-fly zone by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This can happen only by implementation or by sending more fighter jets.
Zelensky has been demanding for several days to declare a no-fly zone, but NATO is refusing it and it (NATO) says that such a move could escalate the war with Russia.
Zelensky spoke to 300 US lawmakers and their staff for about an hour. The talks come at a time when Russian bombings of Ukrainian cities continue and they have besieged several cities while 1.4 million Ukrainians have taken refuge in neighboring countries.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “President Zelensky has appealed out of desperation.” He said Zelensky wants the US to send planes from Eastern European partners. “I will do everything I can to help the administration with his transfer,” Schumer said.
