A resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim community’s holy month of Ramadan will be voted on in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday. The new proposal has been brought after the US-sponsored proposal was vetoed by Russia and China on Friday. The US proposal demanded an “immediate and permanent ceasefire” in the Israel-Hamas war. The US warned that the resolution to be voted on on Monday morning could affect the efforts being made by the US, Egypt and Qatar to stop the hostilities. If this happens then the possibility of vetoing this new proposal will also increase and this time America will veto it.
Voting was to be held on Saturday first
The resolution has been brought by the 10 elected members of the Security Council and is supported by Russia and China and the 22-nation Arab Group at the United Nations. The month of Ramzan is from 10 March to 9 April. This means that if the proposal is approved then the duration of the ceasefire will be only two weeks. Although the draft says “there should be a permanent ceasefire”, the vote on the resolution was to be held on Saturday morning, but its sponsors postponed it till Monday morning.
Hamas terrorists attacked Israel
Many members of the Security Council are expecting the UN’s most powerful body to demand an end to the war. Hamas terrorists had suddenly attacked Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking about 250 people hostage, after which the war started. Hamas is still believed to be holding around 100 people hostage. AP
