Recently, on the petition of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri’s wife Zakia Jafri, when the Supreme Court gave a complete clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the Gujarat riots. Then the next day Gujarat ATS arrested social worker Teesta Setalvad from Mumbai and took her to Ahmedabad. The United Nations Human Rights Office commented on India on this arrest of Setalvad. The Ministry of External Affairs has given a befitting reply to this comment of the UN.
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Wednesday categorically rejected the UN’s remarks, terming it as completely wrong and undesirable. Along with this, while replying to the UN, said, this comment interferes with the independent judicial system of India. Bagchi further said that the Indian authority has taken action against the violation of law in accordance with established judicial rules.
Your comment is undesirable in the Indian judicial system.
Bagchi further said, this remark by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCR) in the United Nations, which has been made regarding the action against Teesta Setalvad, is completely wrong and undesirable in this case. His remarks appear to be interfering in the Indian independent judicial system. Earlier this week, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed concern over the arrest and detention of social activist Setalvad and called for his immediate release.
Bagchi’s befitting reply to the UN
Bagchi further said that India works strictly against violation of law as per judicial procedures. Your describing the activism of legal actions in this way as harassment is like creating confusion among people. Terming such legal action as harassment is misleading to the people of the country which cannot be accepted.
Supreme Court gives clean chit on Gujarat riots
Prior to this, the Supreme Court had rejected a big conspiracy regarding the 2002 Gujarat riots. In February 2012, the court had upheld the clean chit given by the SIT to 62 other accused, including the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The very next day, the Gujarat ATS had detained the social worker Setalvad. Apart from this, Sreekumar and Sanjeev Bhatt were arrested in the same case.
